Free vs Paid Courses: A Decision Framework

Stop agonizing over whether to pay. Three questions tell you exactly when a paid course is worth it and when free is the smarter choice.

The free-versus-paid debate gets treated like a matter of principle. It isn't. It's a practical decision you can make in about thirty seconds with three questions. Here's the framework.

Question 1: Is the content actually better, or just packaged better?

For most foundational topics, the free material is as good as or better than anything paid — The Odin Project, freeCodeCamp, official docs, and university courses like CS50 are world-class. Paid courses rarely contain secret knowledge. What they sell is packaging: a clear path, polish, and someone to ask. If you only need the information, free almost always wins.

Question 2: Is structure or accountability your real bottleneck?

Be honest about why you're stuck. If you have plenty of resources but keep drifting, never finishing, losing momentum — your problem isn't access to content, it's accountability. That is the one thing worth paying for, because the true cost of self-teaching is the months lost to drift, not the price of a course.

This is exactly where a guided, cohort-based program earns its price — a set schedule, deadlines, and mentors who notice when you stall. Locally, DTI (dti.al) is built around that model; internationally, look for cohort programs rather than another pile of self-paced video. Pay for the accountability, not the information.

Question 3: Does a specific opportunity require it?

Sometimes a particular job posting asks for a recognized certificate — a cloud cert, a security cert, a specific specialization. If a concrete opportunity names it, buy it. If you're buying a credential 'just in case', you're probably buying reassurance, not a result.

The rule

  • Pay when structure or accountability is your genuine blocker.
  • Pay when a specific opportunity explicitly requires a credential.
  • Otherwise, use the excellent free resources — and put the money you saved toward the one paid thing that actually unblocks you.

Free versus paid was never the real question. 'What is actually stopping me from finishing?' is. Answer that, and the spending decision answers itself.
